Choosing a seed drill for livestock farms

Seeding work on livestock farms differs in many ways from the needs of arable farms. Grassland renewal, overseeding, small seeds and starter fertilisers place specific requirements on a seed drill. When the machine is selected with these needs in mind, seeding work remains efficient and flexible throughout the season.

Efficient work with fewer refills

On livestock farms, a smooth workday is especially important. When a seed drill can cover up to 9–10 hectares with one hopper fill, time is not lost on constant stops. This has a clear impact on daily efficiency, particularly during the busy spring period.

In Junkkari’s example, real work output has been measured over a full working day under typical farm conditions, including field transfers and hopper refilling.

  • With a 4-metre machine, around 25 hectares can be sown in an eight-hour workday
  • With a 7-metre machine, the area increases to around 35 hectares

The calculation includes three hopper refills during the day, making it a realistic figure for everyday farm work.

Small seed solutions add flexibility

Livestock farms typically sow small seeds much more often than arable farms. On Junkkari seed drills, small seed units increase total capacity and allow several different working methods.

  • On a 4-metre machine, the small seed unit adds 400 litres of extra capacity
  • On W models, small seed feeding is handled by an APV unit with a 500-litre capacity

The 4-metre machine can also be equipped with two small seed or starter units. This allows seed, fertiliser, small seed and starter fertiliser to be applied in a single pass. This is especially useful for grassland establishment and renewal, as well as on fields where base fertilisation has been done with manure and starter nutrients need to be adjusted by field.

Small seeds can be applied either by broadcast spreading on the surface or through the coulters, for example in grassland overseeding.

Combicoulter supports fast early growth

In Junkkari’s Combicoulter, seed and fertiliser are placed in the same row. This ensures that even a smaller amount of fertiliser is immediately available to the seed. On livestock farms, this supports even and rapid early growth, especially for grass crops.

Fertilisation can also be supplemented with a fast-acting starter nutrient placed in the same row. This is important because nutrients from manure are released slowly during the growing season.

Easy operation and adjustment on PRO models

On ISOBUS-equipped PRO models, machine operation and adjustment are designed to be as smooth as possible.

  • Calibration tests can be performed easily from the terminal
  • Different seed and fertiliser types have their own memory settings as standard, making variety changes quick
  • Seed and fertiliser rates can be adjusted electrically during operation, also using variable rate application maps

These features reduce errors and save time when moving between fields and crop types.

Easy to pull, even in soft conditions

On livestock farms, fields can be soft in spring and bearing capacity often varies. Junkkari seed drills are equipped with a large 7.5 × 20″ tyre and a bogie-mounted wheel system that follows ground contours. This reduces draft force requirements and improves carrying capacity.

The result is easier work in challenging conditions and a lower risk of soil compaction. The Combi coulter system also reduces draft force and allows residues, stones and uneven ground to pass through easily after grassland use.

Reliable support during the busy season

Spring seeding is a short and busy period. When time is limited, reliable support is essential. Junkkari is known for fast and professional spare parts service, helping keep machines running during the season.

Junkkari also provides direct technical support from experienced specialists. This support has received very positive feedback for its expertise and practical advice, giving farmers confidence that help is available whenever needed.

The right machine supports everyday work on a livestock farm

On a livestock farm, the seed drill is used for many tasks, not only in spring. It is used for grassland establishment, overseeding and sowing different crops during the season. This makes reliability and ease of use especially important.

When the machine capacity matches the farm’s needs, daily work runs smoothly and seeding stays under control throughout the season.
